2020 Municipal Elections: Solidarity “at the heart” of the Nice au coeur list’s program

Latest News

Patrick Allemand and his running mates Christine Dorejo and Xavier Garcia presented the third part of the program for the Nice au Coeur list.

Following Nice Durable and Nice Fluide, it’s now the turn for Nice Solidaire—while awaiting the fourth pillar, Nice Intelligente—which presented over thirty proposals or recommendations. When added to those from the two previous presentations, they approach 150 in total.

Perhaps choosing the most strategic ones would better highlight the direction of this social-democratic left list, which must contend with the political offers of the ecologist and radical left.

Interviewed 30 days before March 15, the head of the Nice au Coeur list remains optimistic: “the feedback from the field is good.”

The document starts with a preamble: “Solidarity has never been considered a priority by the current municipal team.” This “truth” would certainly be contested by Christian Estrosi and his peers, but for Patrick Allemand, there is no doubt: “this is the reality,” he says, relying on data from the Institut Montaigne.*

The proposals follow, divided by title: (i) “housing for all,” (ii) “health for all,” (iii) “social justice,” (iv) “move towards the goal of zero homeless”: who could disagree?

If the utopian side—”we must have our heads in the sky”—adds some spice to these fine words, the realistic side—”and feet on the ground”—calls for pragmatism: these listed items, without indicating priorities, take on the semblance of the yellow pages. It should be noted that a certain number of recommendations do not require additional funding but rather stem from political will and a change in the existing organization.

For example, some are cited by title:

(i) build 1,700 social housing units per year in the metropolis, including 1,100 in the city of Nice; create 1,000 new student rental housing units during the mandate.

(ii) make the fight against addictions (tobacco, alcohol, cannabis) among adolescents a major municipal cause; develop addiction prevention actions starting in primary school, with priority in Rep+ areas.

(iii) increase support for operational community life in neighborhoods; create a municipal guarantee to facilitate housing for young workers.

(iv) ensure that all homeless people know their rights, in particular the possibility to register at the CCAS to receive the basic RSA; double the number of emergency accommodations during the mandate.
