The people of Nice mobilized this Saturday, September 12, as they usually do when a cause is close to their hearts; they do not hesitate. This Saturday, the issue at hand was the cause of migrants.
All those interested could take part in a symbolic citizen march, demonstrating the city of Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes’ concern for the fate of these refugees. The procession started shortly after 3 PM from the Théâtre de Verdure to the War Memorial, where a minute of silence was observed.
This gathering was initiated by a Facebook page and supported by numerous associations from Nice.
All rallied behind a white banner with the words: “yes to welcoming refugees.”
For each individual, it was important to recall that most of these people are fleeing war, poverty, and violence, taking enormous risks that cost the lives of thousands among them.
A thousand people is already a lot, but is it enough? Have we seen much larger gatherings in Nice? Yes. Do all the people of Nice feel united in the cause supported by this gathering? Time will tell. In the end, there were few raised voices, a single banner, and very few signs and placards at the demonstration. Some, however, carried significant messages such as:
– “borders are as criminal as wars”
– “There are no foreigners on Earth”
– “Free movement of people”
There was also a need to remind people of the law, with Articles 13 and 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which guarantee everyone’s right to freedom of movement and the right to seek asylum in another country.
The march was very colorful, with various ethnicities gathered, showing their solidarity. Some were eager not to remain in their comfort zones that day while others desperately needed it.
Will their message be heard…
