Eleven people from the same family, including four children from Nice, are suspected of having gone to Syria to wage jihad.
The Prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes has contacted Ivano Sovieri, the father of a convert, who reported the incident while the Departmental Security took charge of the case from the start. It now falls under the jurisdiction of the anti-terrorism division of the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office.
This new case is part of a departmental context that illustrates the mobilization of the State services after the Parliament, prompted by the Government, passed a law strengthening measures to combat terrorism, particularly to prevent and more effectively repress the phenomenon of jihadism.
Two systems have already been implemented in the Alpes-Maritimes department: A network of representatives from the various services concerned with this issue (Public Security, Border Police, National Gendarmerie, National Education, Youth Judicial Protection, etc.) has been specifically set up to gather and disseminate information, along with a support unit for families, depending on the domicile and the nature of the problems encountered.
Collaboration between services, including municipal ones, is now well established. The exchange of information is swift and encounters no particular difficulties.
The examination of cases often reveals self-radicalization of individuals tempted by jihad, with a predominant role of the internet and, more broadly, social networks.
The Prefecture facilitates all necessary information exchanges with the National Assistance Center for the Prevention of Radicalization (CNAPR), which is part of the anti-terrorism coordination unit of the Ministry of the Interior (UCLAT).
