As part of a convention for education and sustainable development, the City of Nice, the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, and the departmental services of the National Education are committed to supporting educational actions for environmental education and sustainable development in schools.
As part of this initiative and the educational project “The School of the World,” carried out in collaboration with the association “Sens Solidaire,” four primary classes from the Port school in Nice (levels CE2 to CM2) have an appointment with Chief Papou Mundiya Kepanga.
Leader of the Kobe Tumbiali community, Mundiya Kepanga is a respected chief of the Huli tribe in Papua New Guinea. Living in the heart of one of the world’s primary forests, he leads a traditional life, devoted to defending the environment, particularly the forest of his country.
Since 2003, he has traveled to Europe and given lectures at the invitation of museums, researchers, or educational institutions. He has participated on numerous occasions in international conferences in Paris (COP21, UNESCO, etc.), in London (UNESCO GEM Report), and in New York.
Students will engage with Chief Mundiya Kepanga in discussions on the environment in general, nature, and the deforestation currently destroying the primary forest of Papua New Guinea. The goal is to provide students with a different perspective on the world.
