Nice organizes the 2025 Year of the Sea with cultural and scientific events to raise awareness about ocean protection. This year will be structured around three pillars: conferences, exhibitions, and activities open to all.

In 2025, Nice is organizing the Year of the Sea, an event aimed at raising awareness about ocean protection. This initiative accompanies the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, which will gather more than 120 heads of state and 20,000 delegates in June.

The city of Nice and the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis have developed a program structured around three axes. The Ocean University will offer nearly 100 conferences and meetings open to all, combining arts and sciences to better understand the connections between humans and the sea. The Biennale of Arts and the Ocean, titled The Sea Around Us in homage to biologist Rachel Carson, will feature 11 exhibitions and a public art trail. Lastly, the Blue Programming will bring together a variety of cultural events: screenings, festivals, readings, concerts, and workshops.

Many funded projects

These initiatives are the result of a call for expressions of interest that selected 18 cultural projects, funded up to 200,000 €. Another call for projects, named Antoine Risso, selected 33 initiatives dedicated to biodiversity preservation, with a total amount of 150,000 €.

“For almost two years, the services of the City of Nice and the Metropolis have been working hand in hand with state and UN services to make every effort to prepare for this absolutely fundamental moment for our shared future,” explains Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice.
