The opposition criticizes the Olympic ice rink project in Nice, deemed too expensive and contrary to the needs of the residents. They demand that public funds be used to renovate existing sports infrastructure rather than finance a project considered elitist.
The planned Olympic ice rink project in Nice is causing a stir. Several opposition parties, the PCF06, the PS06, and Les Écologistes de Nice, are strongly criticizing this decision. They denounce it as a costly investment and believe that other priorities should be considered.
The municipality plans to build a modular sports complex that will transform into a 12,000-seat sports venue. This facility is expected to host ice hockey matches during the 2030 Winter Olympics. For the opponents, this decision poses several problems. A second facility is expected to be built near the Allianz Riviera stadium. Its capacity should be 6,000 seats.
According to them, local sports infrastructures are in poor condition and lack maintenance. “While amateur clubs, schools, and sports associations struggle to find training slots and decent facilities, Christian Estrosi prefers to roll out the red carpet for an elitist project, reserved for a minority,” they denounce in a joint statement.
A location that raises questions
Another sticking point concerns the project’s location. The site chosen by the municipality is near the Nice Valley business area, next to the Allianz Riviera. However, according to the Metropolitan Local Urban Plan, this site was intended for the construction of social housing. “The city is not a playground for the mayor’s personal ambitions. It’s up to the citizens to decide on priorities, not the developers,” claim the opponents.
They demand that public funds be redirected towards the renovation and development of accessible infrastructures for all. “Sports are not a luxury reserved for a privileged few. It is a fundamental right, a tool for emancipation and social cohesion.”
The opponents call for mobilization to contest this project and demand investments deemed more useful for the people of Nice.
As a reminder, the ice hockey club Aigles de Nice, which plays in the Ligue Magnus, should benefit from a brand new 5,000-seat arena. The Jean Bouin ice rink is set to be partially demolished to make way for a large aquatic hub.
