The Nice municipal council has voted to transfer this listed site to the Alpes-Maritimes department. A large-scale project focused on climate research and awareness will come to fruition.

During the session on December 18, 2024, the Nice municipal council approved the sale of the Roseland Abbey to the Alpes-Maritimes department. This site has been listed as a historical monument since 1996 and will become a “Climate Institute,” dedicated to research, awareness-raising, and promoting the history of the place.

Owned by the municipality of Nice since 1971, the Roseland Abbey is located in the heart of a wooded area of 8,200 m². This estate comprises a main building of 700 m² over three floors, outbuildings, a cloister, and a chapel. Despite its architectural charm, the entire property required significant rehabilitation work, justifying the decision to put it up for sale in 2023.

After a competitive bidding process, the department’s project was selected. It follows a logic of heritage preservation and sustainable development.

Three Spaces for One Mission

The Climate Institute will be organized around three distinct sections. An exhibition space will be designed to raise awareness among the general public and school children about climate issues. A second space, set up as a “campus,” will serve as a residence for researchers working on environmental issues. Finally, a third section will be dedicated to memory and communication about the history of the abbey.

The project, which adheres to the recommendations of the Architect of French Buildings, must ensure tranquility for the neighborhood residents.

The city of Nice and the department share a common ambition: to make this place a strong symbol of the fight against climate change. With the secondary goal of enhancing the local heritage, this collaboration marks a new step in local policies for preservation and awareness-raising.
