Alternative Communiste 06 firmly opposes the legalization of the building permit for the T2.3 extension of the Nice-Cรดte d’Azur airport terminal. This position is based on an in-depth analysis of the environmental, social, and climate consequences presented in a supplementary impact study.
This is the project causing much debate at the start of this year. The Nice terminal extension project is generating a lot of discussion. The ongoing public inquiry has sparked numerous criticisms, notably from the citizen rally ViVA!, which has been mobilized against this project since 2019.
According to the impact study, the terminal’s extension would lead to a significant increase in noise pollution (+10% by 2034) and air pollution (+1.3% for NO2 in Nice). These figures add to an already critical situation. The west of Nice and Saint-Laurent-du-Var are already suffering from chronic pollution due to transportation. The carbon footprint is also criticized: the extension would generate over 380,000 additional tonnes of CO2 per year, an increase of 30% in emissions linked to the airport.
The project will also impact road traffic, worsening traffic jams and transport-related pollutants. These emissions directly affect residents’ health, increasing the risks of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
An Irresponsible Development
Alternative Communiste 06 also condemns the over-tourism logic encouraged by this project. The planned increase of 7 million passengers by 2034 will exacerbate the housing crisis in Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes. The rise in tourist rentals is reducing the housing available to residents, leading to urban segregation and increased pressure on local infrastructure.
Moreover, this project contradicts the climate objectives set by the city and the metropolis. The IPCC warns against climate risks in the Mediterranean basin, where the airport is vulnerable to rising waters and flooding. The supplementary impact study does not propose any credible solutions to these risks.
The citizen rally ViVA! highlights the environmental and social contradictions of this project. A petition launched in 2019 against this extension gathered more than 13,000 signatures. The opposition remains strong.
Alternative Communiste 06 and ViVA! are calling to reject this extension project. They advocate for an economic and tourism development model that respects the environment and local populations. For them, it is essential to prioritize infrastructures that meet the real needs of residents and the fight against climate disruptions.
