Located in the northern district of Nice, Place Alexandre-Médecin will undergo a significant requalification. The objective is clear: expand the square, reduce the presence of cars, and reconnect the site to the neighborhood. The first phase of the work is expected by the end of 2025.
Place Alexandre-Médecin, well-known to the people of Nice as “Saint-Maurice,” is set to change. This spot, situated between the Ray Park and the pedestrian area of Borriglione, will undergo urban redevelopment. The square, currently limited to 900 m², will be expanded to 1,800 m². Doubling the area marks the beginning of a new phase for this public space.
According to Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, the square currently suffers from isolation caused by the width of the surrounding roads, some reaching 25 meters. This division limits usage and makes pedestrian access to the shops and housing bordering the square difficult.
The project’s aim is to create a more accessible, peaceful, and pleasant neighborhood core. The mayor announces: “we are committed to transforming this space into a real place of life, by doubling the surface area of the square […]. We will also calm the traffic to offer a more serene and secure environment.”
To achieve this, part of the roadway will be removed. The project also plans for better integration of pedestrian paths and connections with the surrounding facades. In essence, a redevelopment favoring soft mobility and social connections.
For a long time, the square hosted events and garage sales. But in recent years, it had lost its appeal. The new project also aims to bring vibrancy back to the neighborhood.
No visuals have been revealed yet, but the municipality promises announcements in the coming weeks. Christian Estrosi specified that “a first phase of the square’s extension will be completed by the end of 2025.”
This project marks the beginning of a new dynamic for the northern district of Nice. More than just a redevelopment, it aims to restore a central function to an emblematic square.
