The closure of access to the A8 from the Boulevard du Mercantour comes into effect this Tuesday. This measure is related to the upcoming commissioning of the Voie Mathis tunnel, scheduled for the end of May.
This Tuesday, April 8, 2025, marks a turning point for Nice’s motorists. Entrance No. 50 of the A8 motorway, located to the west of the city, will be permanently closed. This ramp allowed access to the A8 towards Aix-en-Provence from the Promenade des Anglais, via the Boulevard du Mercantour.
This closure is part of the development of the future West exit of the Voie Mathis. The tunnel, which will directly connect the expressway to the motorway network, is set to be operational by the end of May. At a length of 850 meters, it is expected to relieve congestion on several heavily trafficked urban roads, such as the Avenue Grinda.
Motorists will now have to use the Nice-Airport interchange (No. 51). It is located between the CADAM district and the Charles-Ehrmann stadium.
On the side of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, there is an emphasis on the importance of following the new traffic instructions. Directional signs will be installed to guide drivers. Those seeking more information can contact the Directorate of Major Projects by phone or email.
Nighttime closures planned until the end of April
In addition to the permanent closure of the Boulevard du Mercantour ramp, another temporary modification is expected. Access to the motorway from Boulevard Valéry-Giscard-d’Estaing will be closed at night, from Monday to Friday, from 9 PM to 5 AM. This measure will be in place until the end of April.
During the day, two lanes will be reserved for entering the motorway on this same road. The goal is to maintain some fluidity during peak hours.
These changes aim to prepare for the commissioning of the Voie Mathis tunnel. Ultimately, the community hopes to save drivers between five and nine minutes when traveling between the east and west of the city. Traffic in the area should also be smoother, particularly with the removal of tramway lights at certain intersections.
This project, launched in April 2021, also includes a landscaping component. About 150 trees and 10,000 shrubs are to be planted on a 2,500 m² surface once the developments are completed.
For regular users of the Nice-West entrance, this closure means changing habits. Planning ahead is recommended to avoid additional traffic jams in the coming weeks.
