Selected for Les Bleus after William Saliba’s injury, the central defender from Nice has strong arguments to hope for a place in Didier Deschamps’ squad, zooming in.
Euro 2024 is fast approaching, and Jean-Clair Todibo has apparently not fully convinced the French coach. The native of Cayenne is currently attending his third national team gathering, once again called up urgently to replace an injured player. An unfair treatment? Perhaps not, given the particularly high competition in the French defensive sector.
From William Saliba (Arsenal) to Jules Koundé (Barcelona), Ibrahima Konaté (Liverpool), Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich), and Lucas Hernandez (PSG), all hold important positions in top European clubs. Jean-Clair Todibo is also not lagging behind, being an integral part of Ligue 1’s best defense. With only four goals conceded after eight league matches, the Gym (2nd) has been an unbreachable wall for most teams at the start of this season.
A Remarkable Start to the Season
“JC is certainly a player who has, as I’ve always said, incredible potential. For our club, for the national team… He’s a player of absolute value,” declared Francesco Farioli after last Saturday’s victory in Metz (1-0). The words set the tone, and nothing seems more fitting after a historically significant start to the campaign by the 23-year-old defender. He has just set a new record in Ligue 1 with 188 touches of the ball against the Metz players. As victors over PSG, the leading Monaco team (14 pts), and on a streak of three consecutive clean sheets, OGC Nice with Jean-Clair Todibo is a serious contender for the Champions League next season.
Is this the issue, though? With no European competition to play in this year, Nice does not provide its players the opportunity to showcase themselves on the Old Continent. This criterion is crucial for Didier Deschamps, even though France boasts major teams in its league. Perhaps this is the opportunity of a lifetime…
Les Bleus will be in Amsterdam this Friday (8:45 PM) to face the Netherlands in the quest for Euro 2024 qualification.
