The health agency reported 12,532 cases detected in 24 hours, the highest number for a Sunday since mid-May.

“The alarm bell has been rung. France has exceeded the alert threshold with an incidence rate of over 50 per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase of 80% in one week, unprecedented since the start of the crisis,” stated government spokesperson Gabriel Attal.

The vast majority of these new cases are due to the highly contagious Delta variant. Consequently, the positivity rate of tests is increasing: it stands at 2% (over seven days at D-3), compared to 1.6% the previous day.

The mortality on Sunday was five deaths in 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 111,501 since the start of the epidemic. Similarly, the pressure on hospitals remains moderate.
