Demographics: The UN report on the world population

9

The UN published its new report on the world population on July 11. It announces that we will surpass 8 billion inhabitants before the end of the year, which is 5.5 billion more than in 1950. That’s a lot of people.

At the level of France, the population is expected to be 70 million people, or 0.88% of humanity, a drop in the ocean of humanity.

According to the UN’s projections, the world population is expected to stabilize around the 2080s, at 10 billion inhabitants. It is immediately after, starting from the 2100s, that its number will begin to decline. The cause: “the end of generational renewal.” A reversal of the situation that the organization did not foresee until the 22nd century.

Among the forecasts of the UN report on the world population, it is the fate of China that fascinates the most. The country, which alone represented a third of humanity in the 19th century, is expected to experience “an absolute decline in its population starting in 2023.” This phenomenon will make it lose its place as the demographic leader, as its population will represent less than 10% of humanity by 2100.
