A few months ago, Christian Estrosi expressed his intention to demolish the National Theater of Nice, which will be replaced by three other venues in different parts of the city. To do so, he needed the authorization of the Minister of Culture, which has now been granted.
As stipulated by law, “no public performance venue specifically designed for concerts, variety shows, or dramatic, lyrical, or choreographic performances can be demolished without the owner or user obtaining the authorization of the minister in charge of culture.”
It is therefore in a letter dated December 2nd that the current minister in charge of culture, Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin, gave her approval for the demolition of the TNN.
In this letter, the minister notably mentions the program of urban transformation and greening of the city, as well as the new cultural offerings, as arguments in favor of the destruction of the TNN.
She also confirms that this building requires significant work and “no longer allows for the deployment of a reception capacity and cultural offerings that meet the expectations of the population.”
Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin nonetheless specifies that she wishes to ensure the continuity of the activities of the National Drama Center, “particularly in programming and in the work of artistic teams.”
In a statement released this Wednesday, December 8th, Christian Estrosi expressed his gratitude to the Minister.
“The extension of the Promenade du Paillon is a tremendous opportunity to continue this transformation, in the spirit of our predecessors who formed the Consiglio d’Ornato in the 19th century, by rethinking our harmonious offering in terms of theater and performing arts. With this demolition approval, the Ministry of Culture is aligning with this ambition. I am delighted and committed to the success of these projects for the benefit of the people of Nice.”
