This Thursday, OGC Nice played their last Europa League match against Bodo/Glimt. Held to a draw by the Norwegians (1-1), the Eagles did not win a single match in the competition.

Ending a disastrous journey in every way! The team from Nice welcomed the Norwegians of Bodo/Glimt, for the 8th and last day of the mini-championship of this Europa League. Already eliminated, the men of Franck Haise had nothing left to play for on a sporting level. To recall, the Eagles conceded their fifth defeat in seven European matches, on the pitch of Elfsborg (0-1), during the last day.

On the lineup side, the Azurean coach made extensive changes, as he did in Sweden last week. Several key players were rested (Evann Guessand, Tanguy Ndombele were not on the match sheet). Up front, the young Farès Bousnina (18 years old) was starting for the first time with the professionals. Returning from suspension, Sofiane Diop also made his return to the red-and-black starting lineup.

The very empty Allianz Riviera

Reflecting their recent performances in the Europa League, the Nice players struggled significantly. Still finding it tough offensively, the teammates of Sofiane Diop could not seriously trouble the opposing goalkeeper. Not enough to excite the few supporters present to support the Eagles.

Under the rain, the Norwegians appeared more enterprising. In a well-organized system, Bodo/Glimt came very close to opening the score around the 30-minute mark. But Maxime Dupé, again starting this evening, was saved by his goal post.

A wake-up too late

And the worst was yet to come for Nice. Following a corner, Bjorkan was found in the box. Unmarked, the Norwegian defender crucified Maxime Dupé (0-1, 54’). Although Nice’s reaction took time, it was commendably present.

Scoring a beautiful one-two with Gaëtan Laborde, Badredine Bouanani brought Nice back into the match (1-1, 75’). Despite this burst of pride, the score did not change further. OGC Nice finishes their international journey in 34th place of the Europa League. Franck Haise’s players did not win a single match this year in the competition (five defeats and three draws in eight matches).

Next match will be on Sunday, February 2nd, for OGC Nice. The Eagles will travel to Toulouse, for the 20th day of Ligue 1. Kick-off is at 3 PM.
