On Tuesday, September 15, 2009, in the Apollon Hall of the Acropolis, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nice will return under the highly anticipated new direction of Maestro Philippe Bender, who has been tasked by deputy-mayor Christian Estrosi with merging the musical ensembles of Nice and Cannes. https://www.nicepremium.fr/article/monastere-de-cimiez-philippe-bender-dirige-l-orchestre-de-cannes.4863.html
The program for this exceptional concert will include Leonard Bernstein’s overture to “Candide,” a musical comedy written by the composer in 1956 based on Voltaire’s work, the very famous “Rhapsody in Blue,” a concert rhapsody for piano and orchestra by George Gershwin, “El sombrero de tres picos” (second suite) by Manuel De Falla, and “Daphnis et Chloé” (second suite) by Maurice Ravel. These last two works share a common thread: they originate from two ballets created by the famous Ballets Russes, commissioned by impresario Sergei Diaghilev.
The presence of Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman, known for his very intimate interpretations, will inaugurate the series of invitations extended to the world’s most brilliant soloists by the new conductor Philippe Bender for the 2009-2010 season.
