The territory of the Alpes Maritimes is once again under an orange heatwave alert since Saturday noon. Expect temperatures reaching 36°C and nights that remain just as sultry.
Météo France has reactivated the heatwave alert “with maximum temperatures generally reaching 33 to 36 degrees on the coast and inland valleys.”
Since the beginning of the summer, Météo France has recorded “40 tropical nights” in the coastal towns of the Azurean coast. In Nice, the temperature has still not dropped below 20 degrees.
Don’t forget the right actions during a heatwave
Since heatstroke and dehydration can happen quickly, here are some simple reflexes to adopt:
- Stay cool at home or in an air-conditioned place;
- Close the shutters and windows;
- Drink water without waiting until you’re thirsty;
- Avoid alcohol;
- Eat fresh and balanced meals;
- Wet your body;
- Prefer gentle activities;
- Check in on the most vulnerable.
More heat but fewer jellyfish in Nice
Despite the heatwave, there is at least some respite for bathers. While last year the beaches were infested with jellyfish, this year you will be much more at ease, as Innel, a lifeguard at Centenaire Beach, confirms: “On this beach, we have not yet recorded any jellyfish cases. This is a good thing compared to last year which was horrible!” He adds that swimming would therefore be “safe” but “with the extreme heat at the moment, it’s the sun and UV rays that you need to be most wary of.”
What to do in case of a sting?
Stay vigilant and don’t forget what to do if you get stung by a jellyfish. “You must not go to the shower, the young man notes before continuing. On the contrary, the key is to stay in the salty water and rub the area. You might also have an allergic reaction, in which case you need to call the rescuers immediately.“
