High Alpine Route: Two Days Across the Legendary Alpine Passes

Latest News

Connecting two of the most prestigious Alpine resorts, Megève and Val d’Isère, over 500 riders grouped into 91 teams started the second stage of the Haute Route Alps.

The overcast, but mostly dry weather provided some relief to the riders after the high temperatures of the previous day. However, it did not make the course easier, with 3 of the most challenging climbs in the French Alps on the schedule.

The stage of the day took the riders on a 111 km course, with 3 ascents and 3500 meters of positive elevation gain. A shorter stage, but even more intense than the previous day. The stage was difficult, but some riders were surprised to find it easier than the previous day, while others suffered due to tired legs.

The first climb of the day is a classic: a steady ascent up to 1650 meters altitude before an enjoyable descent into the Beaufortain Valley. This was followed by a long climb to reach the summit of Cormet de Roselend, nearly 2000 meters high, made less difficult thanks to the cloudy skies and the stunning view of the lake. Today, the riders were less affected by heat, dehydration, and cramps.

The last 25 kilometers of climbing towards Val d’Isère were long, including 2 stretches on narrow roads along the mountain and some sections exceeding 12%, and the cyclists felt the fatigue of having covered 260 km over two days. A slightly downhill section before the finish line boosted the riders’ spirits, and many of them sprinted to the line.

The second stage crowned Peter Pouly after 3h20min07sec of effort. He crossed the finish line ahead of his closest rival, Ariya Pounsavath, who finished in 3h28min37sec, just one minute ahead of Frenchman David Polveroni.

The standings remained unchanged among the women, but Amélie Laurendon and Marg Fedyna caught up with Tatjana Ruf, who delivered impressive performances over the past 2 days.

After two days on the bike, the riders of the Haute Route Alps are enjoying the magnificent facilities in Val d’Isère to rest and recover.
