Meeting the Students Who Chose the Uniform

This morning Éric Ciotti visited Saint-Vincent-de-Paul school in Nice. An educational institution that has opted for a single uniform since 2014.

Following Gabriel Attal’s announcement in which he expressed the desire to experiment with school uniforms, Éric Ciotti declared his candidacy to experiment with a single uniform for middle school students in the department.

In a school in Nice, this has been the case for nine years, since a school trip to England where the students visited a school. They noticed that students across the Channel were all dressed in the same way to go to school. The management conducted a survey among families. 85% were in favor of wearing school attire, one family was against it, and a few were undecided. The school’s principal, Christine Watier, decided the students would have a single uniform starting from September 2014. “Economic differences disappear. At the beginning of the year, a pack of seven clothing items is requested from parents for a price of €120, which includes all the necessary tops.”

“Transmitting reference points and values”

These are navy blue polos branded with Saint-Vincent-de-Paul. There is no specific requirement for the bottom, but it must be blue and without patterns. The students interviewed are satisfied with this uniform. Iris, a fifth-grade student, finds it more practical and no longer questions whether she is fashionable compared to her classmates.

Today, the deputy Éric Ciotti visited to assess the success of the single uniform. He stated that “this clothing brings back a sense of school life. It erases differences and is profoundly republican. We return to the spirit of the republican school, which had only one objective: to transmit reference points and values and to ensure that regardless of origins or social categories, everyone can elevate themselves in society through knowledge.”

He advocates for a single uniform that would eliminate and erase any attempts at religious proselytism and influences that could be harmful in school life.
