1. Napoleon by Ridley Scott
The director of Gladiator and The Martian, Ridley Scott, presents a biopic on the pivotal French historical figure, Napoleon Bonaparte, portrayed by Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix. A great man, tyrannical emperor, passionate lover, and power-hungry military leader, he fascinates as much as he divides. Ridley Scott traces his rise and fall as the self-proclaimed first emperor of the French in 1804, through the lens of his intense and chaotic relationship with Josephine, the great love of his life.
2. Noah’s Ark by Bryan Marciano
Noëlle, portrayed by Valérie Lemercier, runs an organization that aids young LGBTQIA+ individuals who have been kicked out by their families because of their identity or sexual orientation. These individuals have varied backgrounds, but beneath their eccentricities lie many broken lives. The organization pledges to support them for six months. It’s the time they have to get back on track, find housing, and a job. A race against time to find a place in a society that has rejected them.
3. Nothing to Lose by Delphine Deloget
Sylvie lives in Brest and is the mother of two children, Sofiane and Jean-Jacques. One night, when Sofiane is alone in the apartment, he gets injured. Social services are alerted. They decide to remove the child from his mother and place him in a foster home for an indefinite period, during the time of the judicial investigation. Sylvie embarks on a determined fight to get her son back, convinced that it is a huge mistake. A drama featuring Virginie Efira, Félix Lefebvre, and Arieh Worthalter.
4. I Am Not a Hero by Rudy Milstein
Louis is a kind lawyer, too kind even, to the point that he almost goes unnoticed by his colleagues. When his doctor informs him that he ‘has cancer, he notices the attitudes of those around him change. Suddenly, he is respected, listened to, loved, and deemed worthy of attention. When he learns that it was a diagnosis error and that he is perfectly healthy, Louis prefers not to say anything, but for how long?
5. A Winter in Yanji by Anthony Chen
Yanji is a Chinese city a few kilometers from the Korean border. In winter, it is covered with a thick blanket of snow. Haofeng, originally from Shanghai, goes there to attend the wedding of an acquaintance, but during this event, which should have been joyful, he feels very lonely. He then randomly meets Nana, a young tour guide who fascinates him. She introduces him to Xiao, a friend who is a cook. The trio quickly become friends after a festive night out. A Winter in Yanji was presented in the Un Certain Regard selection at the Cannes Film Festival 2023.
