Municipal elections in Nice: the left-wing alliance is struggling

The left-wing and ecological political forces in Nice launched their project for the municipal elections on Saturday, January 11. Despite tensions over the issue of unity, a first meeting was held to outline the main points of a shared program.

Gathered at the PCF 06 premises, representatives of the New Popular Front – bringing together the PCF, the PS, and the Ecologists – began reflecting on a joint municipal project. The clear goal is: to place the residents of Nice at the heart of public policies after years of governance focused on overtourism and the most favored categories.

The participants identified several priorities: purchasing power, housing, security, transport, and the environment. These themes will be explored in greater depth during future work sessions. A second phase of discussions, open to personalities, experts, and neighborhood residents, will begin in the coming months.

However, the absence of La France Insoumise (LFI) at this first meeting was noted. The organizers expressed their wish for this partner to join the initiative for a broader union.

Still a Fragile Gathering

Meanwhile, the citizen gathering ViVA! denounced its exclusion from this first meeting. A delegation showed up at the venue but was not allowed to participate. “You don’t start union by excluding. You don’t start openness by closing the door”, reacted the members of ViVA!, calling on the parties to return to dialogue.

To maintain this momentum, ViVA! is organizing a day of reflection and thematic work. This event is called “Bolèga Bambana” and will take place on Saturday, January 18 at the International Youth Center. Political and citizen forces are invited to lay the foundations of a common project for Nice.

The path toward a single candidacy for the municipal elections remains fraught with challenges. But the left-wing and ecological players agree on one thing: the urgent need for change to meet the residents’ needs. The future of this union will depend on the compromises each is willing to make in the coming weeks.
