In response to the night of violence that struck the country, Eric Ciotti has officially requested the declaration of a state of emergency. At the same time, a crisis unit was chaired by the President of the Republic.
Since yesterday, a large number of acts of violence have been recorded throughout France. A revolt linked to the incident leading to the death of Nahel, who was shot by a police officer following a failure to comply. This Thursday, in view of the unrest affecting the country for nearly 48 hours, the president of the Republicans, Éric Ciotti, called on the head of state to declare a “state of emergency.”
In a statement, the deputy for the 1st constituency of the Alpes-Maritimes condemned the unbearable images of riots. “Town halls and police stations attacked, destruction of street furniture, equipment stolen from law enforcement, tram set on fire… This is the result of a night of riots and destruction that will cost millions of euros,” deplores Eric Ciotti. In no way can the Republic submit. I request the immediate declaration of a state of emergency wherever incidents have erupted.”
A first since 2005
Last night, the police stations in the Moulins and Ariane neighborhoods were targeted by mortar fire. Two individuals were arrested. Across France, these acts of violence are reminiscent of the riots linked to the death of Zyed and Bouna in 2005. Jacques Chirac, then President of the Republic, eventually declared a state of emergency 12 days after the incident. It was in effect for nearly two months.
To recall, the state of emergency has been enforced twice in France since its implementation in 1995. The last time was during the November 2015 attacks.
