The extension of the Promenade du Paillon enters a new phase, with details of the planned new facilities. It is a major achievement of the City of Nice’s climate safety plan.
The extension of the Promenade du Paillon aims to add 8 additional hectares of green spaces in the heart of the city. This strategy is intended to combat heat islands and to increase soil permeability during heavy rains. Last summer, measurement campaigns between mineralized spaces and green spaces were conducted. Notable temperature differences were recorded, demonstrating the benefits provided by urban vegetation. This initiative is built around various developments aimed at improving living conditions in the city.
More and more green spaces, the winning strategy
Removal of Buildings
This first approach involves removing buildings that create “canyon streets”, which favor the concentration of pollutants. To counteract these harmful effects, a new urban forest will be planted. This forest will create a significant temperature contrast with the rest of the city, generating refreshing thermal breezes. With the risk of increasing heatwaves in the coming years, this urban forest will help combat this eventuality.
Creation of New Green Spaces
These new green spaces bring numerous benefits to urban living. The enthusiasm for these areas is evident, particularly among families, as demonstrated by the recent inauguration of the St Jean d’Angely garden. These green spaces help to reduce the number of cardiovascular diseases, being true wellness areas that improve the living conditions of residents. The extension of the Promenade des Paillon aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 1,740 tons per year. This initiative enhances the territory’s biodiversity with the creation of new soils.
Creation of New Markets
Markets for nurserymen will be created to ensure the availability, quality, and uniformity of the chosen trees, thereby ensuring the progress of the project. No fewer than 1,500 trees will be planted along the extension of the Promenade du Paillon. Eucalyptus, Gleditsia, Jacaranda, Magnolia, Paulownia, Pines, Oaks, an entire range of trees respecting the ecosystem criteria of the tree charter. This charter takes into account species and varieties that consume the least possible water, capture the maximum amount of CO2, and combat urban heat islands. The first plantations should be carried out as early as next year.
The numerous developments for the extension of the Promenade du Paillon are all focused on a desire to improve living conditions within the city. Notable improvements are always a central concern for the Mayor.
