Nice leads the way: the train enters into competition

Latest News

A new era for trains in the southern region. On Friday, February 14, Nice marked a major turning point in its railway network. The Sud-Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region becomes the first in France to open its regional trains to competition.

The event was held at Nice Ville station in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Philippe Tabarot. He was accompanied by Renaud Muselier, president of the region, Christian Estrosi, mayor of Nice, and Céline Caron-Dagioni, Minister of Equipment of Monaco. An official launch that opens a new chapter for rail transport in the Azure region.

With the arrival of SNCF Voyageurs Sud Azur, service quality is at the heart of the priorities. The goal is clear: more trains, extended schedules, and greater regularity. From now on, between Cannes and Menton, a train will pass every 15 minutes during the day. As a result, 20,000 additional seats are made available to users every day. A significant advancement for one of the busiest lines in France outside the Paris region.

An awaited modernization

This transition did not happen overnight. For five years, the region has been preparing for this opening. A hundred agents were recruited to ensure the smooth functioning of the service. Last September, a full-scale rehearsal was organized to test the system in real conditions. Since December 15, SNCF Voyageurs Sud Azur has been fully operational.

Philippe Tabarot reminded everyone: this new era is a challenge. “Being the first obliges us to excellence. We have the duty to succeed.” The Minister praised the commitment of the railway workers and the involvement of the teams. He also highlighted the region’s ambition for greener and more efficient mobility.

Opening to competition is accompanied by an enhancement of security. The number of security agents will increase by 40%. Train punctuality is also a priority, with an announced goal of 98% regularity. A real leap forward for users.

After the ceremony, Philippe Tabarot took the tram to interact with controllers. A key moment, a few days after the adoption of his law on transport security. From now on, agents will be able to use body cameras and will have the power to expel individuals for misconduct. “The safety of travelers is a national priority,” he affirmed.

A strong regional commitment

Renaud Muselier welcomed this transformation. “More trains, more security, more punctuality, all without increased fares.” The region is investing massively: 1.5 billion euros to improve infrastructure and modernize rolling stock.

Christian Estrosi emphasized the environmental impact. “Nice is ahead of its 2030 mobility plan. The reduction of CO2 emissions is a reality.” The city also hopes to see its project for the 2030 Winter Olympics progress thanks to this rail reinforcement.

The launch of this new service will be closely watched. If successful, other regions may follow the model. One thing is certain, the face of trains in the southern region has changed. A train more frequent, more reliable, and more secure.
