The city of Nice is launching a new architect consultation for the renovation of the MAMAC after abandoning an initial project. During the work, the museum will continue its activities outside its walls and maintain its programming.
The municipality has decided to review its renovation project for the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC). After an unsuccessful initial bid, a new architect consultation is being initiated at the start of 2025. The aim remains the same: to provide a renovated setting for this museum while maintaining its roots in contemporary creation.
Having been in progress for several years, the transformation of the MAMAC encountered an initial setback. A first contract had been made to design and oversee the work, with the first stages having started in 2024. Structural diagnostics, relocation, and securing of artworks had been launched in anticipation of a thorough renovation.
However, the project proposed by the selected architect proved to be too far from expectations set by the municipality. Faced with this divergence, the project leaders decided to terminate the contract and initiate a new consultation. Despite this change, the reopening deadline remains set for 2029.
An active museum
During the renovation, the MAMAC remains active. It continues its programming outside its walls, in collaboration with museums in Nice and across the nation. Its collections are also presented internationally. To maintain a connection with the public, mediation initiatives have been developed in schools, colleges, hospitals, and other institutions in the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis.
In 2025, several events will highlight the museum’s activities, notably within the framework of the Biennale des Arts et de l’Océan. The complete program is available on the MAMAC website: www.mamac-nice.org.
