On behalf of the 25th and penultimate day of the Marmara SpikeLigue, NVB (6th) challenged Chaumont (1st) in Palmeira. The challenge seemed difficult for Brice Donat’s men against one of the title contenders this season. However, the Niçois succeeded, securing a victory (3-0).
After four impressive victories against Tourcoing, Sète, Plessis-Robinson, Narbonne, the challenge was steep for NVB against the leader, Chaumont. Surprisingly efficient, the Eagles stunned the Chaumontais to seize victory authoritatively in 3 sets and take 5th place before the final day next week.
A closely contested first set
From the start, the two teams offered an intense duel, exchanging blows. After a balanced beginning (6-8, 15-16), Nice managed to take a slight advantage at the end of the set (21-20). Thanks to a final collective effort and solid net play, the locals narrowly concluded the set (25-23).
Nice in control
Driven by a Simon Hirsch effective in attack (10 points, 39% success rate), the Niçois quickly took the lead in the second set. Leading (16-13) then (20-21), the Eagles managed to reverse the trend in the money-time and claimed victory (26-24), particularly benefiting from Chaumont’s imprecision in reception.
NVB’s resilience
The Azuréens started the third set with intensity (8-7, 16-14), and managed their lead diligently. Merrick McHenry (11 points, 58% effectiveness) and Alexandros Raptis (11 points as well) were decisive at key moments. Despite strong resistance from the opponents, Nice concluded the match authoritatively (25-23), sealing an important victory in the race for the best possible place in the play-offs.
With this clear and controlled success, Brice Donat’s men move to 5th place. They demonstrate having the resources to hope for much before the play-offs. However, they must remain focused before the play-offs, with the final championship match against Tours next Saturday at 8 PM, where the Eagles will attempt to maintain their positive momentum.
