Nice has its own Michelangelo’s David

Latest News

A new 6-meter-high bronze statue representing Michelangelo’s David has been installed on the Promenade du Paillon with the TNN’s rear façade as a backdrop.

Naturally, it is a replica* (and not a copy), the original being a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504, and measuring 4.34 meters in height (5.14 meters with the pedestal), carved from a single block of white Carrara marble.

Michelangelo depicted David with a sling (a leather strap used as a slingshot) in hand, just before his battle against Goliath.

Initially placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio to symbolize the determination of a young republic, the original has been on display at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence since 1873.

We owe this gesture of munificence to the Nice-based gallery owner of Italian origin, Antonio Sapone, represented by his daughter Paola. The sculpture will remain on display for three years as stipulated in the agreement between the lender and the City of Nice.

Grazie!
