The Colombian Carlos Betancur (AG2R La Mondiale) won the 6th stage of Paris-Nice on Friday in Fayence (southeast), and donned the yellow leader’s jersey two days before the finish in Nice. This Saturday’s stage is between Mougins and Biot-Sophia Antipolis and tomorrow is the grand finale in Nice.
Betancur, already the winner the previous day in Rive-de-Gier, overtook the world champion, the Portuguese Rui Costa, at the finish judged at the top of a steep ramp. The Czech Zdenek Stybar, world cyclo-cross champion, took third place, 3 seconds behind, ahead of the yellow jersey holder, the Briton Geraint Thomas.
In the provisional general classification, Betancur (24 years old) now leads Thomas by 8 seconds and Costa by 18 seconds. On Saturday, the 7th stage in the Alpes-Maritimes (southeast) between Mougins and Biot Sophia Antipolis features a route alternating climbs (five listed hills) and descents over 195.5 kilometers.
