“I congratulate the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes who this morning in Nice, as part of a necessary intervention to secure the site, arrested 72 undocumented individuals, the majority of whom are Tunisian nationals, all having entered the national territory illegally.
I wish to commend the determination of the French Government in protecting its territory, its citizens, and for upholding its laws.
Once again, it demonstrates its commitment to relentlessly fight against the scourge of illegal immigration. Through this action today, it also shows that a firm policy is possible, and sends a strong message indicating that the total illegality in which these immigrants find themselves is not acceptable for our country.”

“Sending a message of firmness to refugees, migrants in precarious situations does not solve the root of the problem but allows for a nod to National Front voters. Always useful in the pre-election period. ‘Communication and firmness’ under the watchful eyes of press photographers, how far will it go?
On the other hand, providing democratic support and an economic response to the peoples of the ‘Arab Spring’ should be the main action of our governments.
Europe must propose a ‘Marshall Plan,’ a true tool of solidarity and co-development for these Mediterranean countries.”
