At the Nice Climate Summit, on Friday, September 27, 2024, 18 mayors of coastal cities signed Sea’ties, a declaration calling for the support of the international community in the face of rising sea levels.
This year, the Nice Climate Summit focuses on issues related to the protection and enhancement of the Ocean. Organized by the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, the City of Nice, and La Tribune, this summit brings together experts from the economic, scientific, and political sectors, with cities being at the forefront as agents of change.
Sea’ties now brings together 70 mayors
It is undeniable that coastal cities are suffering from one of the consequences of climate change — the rising sea level. Thus mobilized, the mayors are determined to fight for their coastlines. There were 18 from around the world who signed the Sea’Ties declaration at the Palais de la Méditerranée.
In this regard, the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, confirms this mobilization: “70% of what is done to protect the ocean, to protect the sea, to protect the coasts, is invested by the municipalities and territories,” he cites according to the OECD. He describes Sea’ties as a pact of mutual assistance: “This means that we commit together to exchange, to share our experiences, to help each other, to seek funding.”
Launched in 2020, today, this convention brings together 70 mayors and governors of coastal cities worldwide.
Continuing this momentum, in June 2025, Nice will host the third United Nations Ocean Conference.
