In his eulogy during the national tribute, President Emmanuel Macron announced that Simone Veil and her husband Antoine will rest at the Panthéon.
She will be the 5th woman* to be interred there (alongside 72 men).
Thank you to @EmmanuelMacron for allowing Simone Veil to enter the #Pantheon with her husband Antoine, in accordance with her family’s wishes, tweeted Christian Estrosi, mayor of Nice.
Simone Veil was born on July 13, 1927, in Nice, where she grew up. She attended the Calmette high school before facing exclusion and deportation in March 1944, along with other Jewish classmates. She lost her parents and brother in the camps.
She later became one of the most respected and committed politicians, eventually becoming President of the European Parliament. She played a fundamental role in European construction and the fraternity of peoples.
She will remain, especially for the French, as the one who enabled the legalization of abortion after a fierce legislative battle in 1974, which she led with incredible resolve and firmness. It was a historic victory for the rights and dignity of women.
On March 18, 2010, she had the supreme honor of being received at the French Academy.
