The “green” bins, a system implemented by the General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes, are going to be installed in public middle schools across the department. The Jean-Giono middle school in Nice received the first example of these “green” bins on March 26, much to the satisfaction of Hervé Pizzinat, the principal of the school. Students and teachers will thus be able to adopt a new lifestyle that is more environmentally friendly. “This paper-sorting operation, which represents a total budget of €90,000, will start right after the spring break,” declared Eric Ciotti, president of the General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes. Paper recycling bins will be placed in classrooms, resource centers, and teachers’ lounges to be accessible to all. Sorting bins will also be present in 72 other public middle schools in the department.
“It takes 5,000 liters of water to produce a ream of 500 A4 sheets. Yet, we, as middle school students, are big consumers of paper. By recycling it, we save water but also save trees,” reminds us Loris Boichot, 14, a young general councilor from the canton of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the initiative’s originator.
