After a marathon match won in nearly three hours of play yesterday, Nice’s Alizé Cornet did not finish her quarter-final match.
This Friday, Alizé Cornet was once again scheduled to play on the center court at the WTA 125 in La Bisbal d’Empordà. After defeating Irene Burillo Escorihuela in the first round, and then Susan Bandecchi in the round of 16, the player from Nice faced Hungarian Dalma Galfi (26 years old, ranked 159th in the world). A promising rise against a former Top 100 member was abruptly halted this afternoon.
After losing her first service game, Alizé Cornet was unable to score a single point on her serve. Visibly impaired, she lost the first set (6-0). There is nothing to learn from this start to the match except that yesterday’s match may have left its mark. The player from Nice decided to call for the tournament doctor before resuming the match.
But nothing helped, as the points and games slipped away. Without any means to defend herself, Alizé Cornet decided to end the match at (3-0) in the second set.
An unfortunate setback especially since it is not possible at this time to determine the problem experienced by the player from Marseilles. Whether it is an injury, a lack of physical freshness, an illness, or something else, it casts doubt on her participation in the Rouen tournament in just under two weeks.
Let’s hope it’s just a minor setback.
