The 9th Italian Cinema Meetings: At War for Love (Welcome to Sicily) by Pierfrancesco Diliberto

Latest News

The 9th Italian Cinema Meetings, organized at the Rialto cinema, presented ten films, some of which have not yet been shown in French theaters.

At the end of this event, we present our three favorites to you.

New York, 1943. Arturo Giammarresi, a Palermo native who emigrated to the United States, dreams of marrying the beautiful Flora, but she is already promised to Carmelo, the son of Lucky Luciano’s right-hand man. The only way to win Flora’s hand is to ask her father directly, who remains in Sicily. Given that the Allies are about to land in Sicily, Arturo enlists in the American army and lands in a small village named Crisafulli. Arthur’s destiny will intertwine with the fate of the inhabitants of Crisafulli, and especially with that of a lieutenant in the Yankee army, the Italian-American Philip Chiamparino, who joined the war out of love for his country.

A comedy set against a historical backdrop, the film tells us how the Americans who came to free the island from Mussolini’s yoke end up offering important positions… to the local mafia.

An enjoyable and delightful caricature of the society of the past, “In guerra per amore” covers various subjects, taking us from a cute romance to the arrival of Italian-American soldiers, loyal to the values of their homeland… or to their own interests.

The main characters are savory and endearing, whether they be soldiers or villagers, and tenderness is present throughout this delightful hour and a half. The numerous touches of humor sprinkled throughout the dialogues and comedic scenes make Pierfrancesco Diliberto’s film a savory comedy.
