The first citizen pact for nature in the Alpes-Maritimes: A call to action

On Friday, November 8, the Alpes-Maritimes Department launched the Lucia Pact, an unprecedented civic commitment to protecting nature. This pact invites every Maralpin to adopt environmentally-friendly practices in their daily lives.

Driven by Charles Ange Ginésy, President of the Alpes-Maritimes Department, the Lucia Pact continues local ecological initiatives, including the Green Deal. It aims to gather citizens around the preservation of the department’s biodiversity and unique landscapes. Each signatory of the Lucia Pact can benefit from a program of workshops, conferences, and field trips to learn how to better protect the surrounding nature.

The first season of the pact, entitled “The Little Creatures Around Us,” highlights the importance of insects and spiders, often misunderstood yet essential. Among the workshops, Christine Rollard, an arachnologist at the National Museum of Natural History, conducted a session to raise awareness about spider diversity, reminding participants of their vital role in our ecosystems.

A Sustainable Commitment for the Future

The Lucia Pact, symbolized by the firefly—a metaphor for light and hope—embodies a commitment to a sustainable future. The Department offers signatories a comprehensive program to support them in their transition to eco-responsible practices. Engaged citizens can participate in activities such as species inventories, insect-friendly garden creations, and educational treasure hunts designed to help them better understand the importance of nature in their daily lives.

Charles Ange Ginésy stated that this pact is an opportunity for each Maralpin to become a biodiversity ambassador and to make concrete contributions to the preservation of the territory. “Committing to nature is essential to slowing climate change and protecting our living environment,” he affirmed.

The Lucia Pact is open to all Maralpins wishing to mobilize for a more environmentally respectful future. By signing this pact, they join a united community to preserve the natural treasures of the Alpes-Maritimes.
