The Villa Masséna in Nice joins the circle of gardens labeled “Remarkable Garden”. This distinction, awarded by the State, highlights the history, landscape quality, and maintenance of this emblematic site of Nice’s heritage.
The garden of Villa Masséna has just obtained the “Remarkable Garden” label. This recognition is granted by a jury of experts, under the auspices of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) and validated by the regional prefect.
Created in 1901 by landscape architect Édouard André, the garden stands out with its composition blending French and English influences. Winding paths, groves, palm trees, and tropical plants coexist in a space open to the public, just steps away from the Promenade des Anglais.
For Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice and president of the Metropolis Nice Côte d’Azur, this distinction recognizes the work carried out by municipal agents: “I wish to congratulate the green spaces teams of the City of Nice who work every day to maintain our parks and gardens. Thanks to their work, we have received this recognition for the third time, as was already the case for the Botanical Garden and Phoenix Park.”
The garden of Villa Masséna becomes the 44th labeled in PACA
Awarded for a duration of five years, the ” Remarkable Garden ” label imposes several conditions on the managers. The site must notably be open to the public at least 40 days a year, provide accessible on-site documentation, and participate in national events like the European Heritage Days.
The Ministry of Culture specifies that this label is intended for gardens presenting cultural, aesthetic, historical, or botanical interest. It takes into account the organization of the space, the quality of the surroundings, the landscape elements, as well as visitor reception and maintenance practices.
The garden of the Villa Masséna is now among more than 400 labeled parks and gardens in France. The PACA region already had 43 alone. This new distinction contributes to the enhancement of Nice’s landscape heritage and its national recognition.
