The Municipality of Nice and the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis have received two distinctions from the Geste d’Or. These awards were granted for the restoration of the Sainte-Anne de Cimiez Chapel and expertise in underwater archaeology. These prizes acknowledge their efforts to preserve and promote local heritage.
The city of Nice and the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis have been recognized by the Le Geste d’Or association. Awards were given for their actions in heritage conservation. Two trophies were awarded. One for the restoration of the Sainte-Anne de Cimiez Chapel, and the other for underwater archaeology expertise by the Nice Côte d’Azur Archaeology service.
The Sainte-Anne de Cimiez Chapel, a 15th-century building, received the “Geste d’Or” for its renovation. This site houses a plaque in memory of soldiers from the 163rd Infantry Regiment of Nice and Provence. It is a historical symbol. The restoration was carried out respecting traditional techniques and environmental considerations.
The other distinction pertains to work in underwater archaeology. Since 2011, a specialized unit has been exploring and documenting the submerged remains of the Baie des Anges and the harbor of Villefranche-sur-Mer. This work has led to the inventory of several sites and has enhanced the understanding of local heritage.
Christian Estrosi praised these distinctions by highlighting the commitment of the teams in charge of heritage. “Their daily efforts to discover, preserve, and restore the heritage of Nice and the metropolis contribute to the international reputation of our city and our metropolis,” stated the Mayor of Nice.
These awards aim to promote a long-term policy of heritage preservation and transmission.
