The Olympic body announced at the end of its Olympic Summit that the Olympic Virtual Series will now be held annually.
The first edition, organized last summer before the Tokyo 2020 Games, was presented as a kind of test run, featuring virtual sports from five international federations. Evidently, it was a success. The IOC reports nearly 250,000 participants and over two million registrations.
Therefore, the Olympic Virtual Series will continue on an annual basis, “thereby offering international federations the opportunity to promote their sports and reach and engage new communities,” explains the IOC.
However, the organization specifies in a statement that details of the 2022 edition will be confirmed during the first half of next year, including the schedule and sports to be included.
