The Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis: An Economic or Political Issue?

Latest News

On Tuesday, March 20, 2012, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, a debate organized by the Junior Chamber International of Nice will take place at the CCI Nice Côte d’Azur on the topic of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis.

In January last year, the “Metropole Nice Côte d’Azur,” the first metropolis in France, was established, replacing the Urban Community Nice Côte d’Azur. This new Public Establishment for Intercommunal Cooperation (EPCI), which includes 46 municipalities and more than 540,000 residents, is the result of the territorial collectivities reform of December 2010.

The aim of the Metropolis is to enhance competitiveness and strengthen solidarity within its territory, particularly between the hinterland and the coast. Its ambition is to create a new model of economic development through a strategy supported and shared by all the actors in the fields of economy, training, and research.
In this context, it seems important to understand the economic and political stakes underpinning this new organization:

What are the major projects proposed by the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis?

How will they be beneficial for the city of Nice?

How will the powers be redistributed between the various local authority entities and the Metropolis?

To what extent will the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis improve business competitiveness in the face of increasing competition at all levels (national, European, international)?

Participants in the debate include: Christian TORDO, President of the EPA in charge of the Var plain within the framework of the OIN Eco Valée and metropolitan deputy; Laurent LACHKAR, Vice-President of the CCI Nice Côte d’Azur; Yvon GROSSO, President of the UPE 06; Jean Pierre Mascarelli, Vice-President of the general council.

The debate will be moderated by François-Xavier CIAIS, Director of the journal Les Petites Affiches des Alpes Maritimes, and Julie DREKSLER, a member of the JCE Nice Côte d’Azur.
