The Segway invades the streets of Nice

Latest News

This new little gem of technology is experiencing considerable success. “Modern and ecological, it matches the current mindset and allows tourists to move around in a fun way,” explains Delphine Semavoine, Mobilboard operational manager in Nice. The Segway is accessible to everyone, starting from the age of 13. The only requirement is to weigh at least 40 kg to be able to operate it.

Present almost everywhere in the world, the Segway moves through the most touristy places: Paris, Rome, Berlin, Madrid… But this device is also a hit in Nice. Since July 21, 2008, everyone can use it in the city of Nice; it only takes a few minutes of training to master it. Tours are organized in groups of 6 people with a guide, who will show you the iconic places of the city from a different perspective. This large-wheeled scooter can reach speeds of 20 km/h and has a range of 40 km. Quick tips: to move forward, simply push the handlebar forward and pull it towards you to reverse.

Several circuits are offered by Mobilboard. The most sought-after among them is the Nice Grand Tour, a route that follows the Promenade des Anglais, goes through Old Nice, and ends at the top of the Castle Hill. From there, you can admire the magnificent panoramas and the famous Bay of Angels. For guided tours, which last from 45 minutes to 1h30, prices range from 25 to 48 euros per person.

For those in Nice who want to try it out, you can rent it from half a day up to a week! A training session of 2 to 4 hours is then provided. To rent one, you can go to Mobilboard*, to partner hotels such as Le Splendide, Le Palais de la Méditerranée, Hotel West End, as well as to the Tourist Office.

Police and businesses are also demanding it…

Tourists are not the only ones charmed by this technological scooter. The municipal police of Nice have been using it since the summer of 2008, and 6 new devices will be delivered for this summer. The Segway thus becomes a work tool and allows, “to meet their criteria for community policing,” concludes Delphine Semavoine.

Being in control of the Segway is an unusual experience that, without a doubt, you will find captivating.
