After several years of contrasting trends, tourism attendance saw a notable increase in 2024. Hotels and residences recorded 13 million overnight stays, an unprecedented figure in over a decade.

The total number of stays in hotels and residences increased by 4%, while the corresponding overnight stays grew by 2%. This accounts for places of residence in the Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco. The hotel supply, up by 3%, contributed to this dynamic. The occupancy rate reached nearly 66% for the year, an increase of one point compared to 2023.

The international clientele continued to return. Foreign stays in hotels and residences increased by 9%. The most dynamic markets are China (+68%), Turkey (+40%), and Greece (+25%). Conversely, the Netherlands (-11%) and Great Britain (-4%) showed a decline. Among the major foreign markets, the United States took the lead with 15% of overnight stays, ousting Great Britain.

Booking platforms for furnished rentals continue to develop. Their overnight stays rose by 8% and their occupancy rate increased by three points, reaching 55%. In campsites, the summer season confirmed its recovery with a 7% increase in overnight stays and an average occupancy exceeding 50%.

A Leisure-centered Tourism

Leisure-based tourism remains predominant. Less than 15% of stays by plane are for business travel, compared to 30% a few decades ago. Conferences continue to play an important role, but changes in professional practices, with a preference for remote work, are having a lasting impact on this segment.

Compared to the pre-Covid period of 2019, there is a return to a classic structure of foreign clientele. The main markets remain the United States, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, and Scandinavia, but new trends are emerging, like the rise of Central and South America.

Despite a decrease in the average length of stays, the performances of 2024 confirm a solid recovery in the tourism sector. This positive development reflects the adaptation efforts of industry players in a changing market.
