The Alpes-Maritimes Department is investing 4.62 million euros to extend the trains on tram line 1. This project aims to increase transport capacity and improve network fluidity.
On Friday, March 14, 2025, the departmental councilors of Alpes-Maritimes met in a plenary session under the presidency of Charles Ange Ginésy. During this session, a grant of 4.62 million euros was approved for extending the trains on tram line 1. This decision aims to enhance transport capacity and offer a more efficient alternative to individual car use.
Tram line 1 experiences significant passenger numbers, with up to 120,000 validations per day. The project’s goal is to streamline the flow in stations and to absorb the increase in passenger numbers. Currently, the network has 28 trains: 15 long trains with 300 seats and 13 short trains with 200 seats. The latter limit commercial speed and reduce carrying capacity. Extending the 13 short trains will harmonize the entire fleet and increase overall capacity by 15%, providing 18,000 additional seats each day.
Improving the efficiency of green mobility
This project is part of the Department’s GREEN Deal policy, which encourages modern and environmentally adapted infrastructures. “The Alpes-Maritimes Department is fully committed to more fluid, accessible, and sustainable mobility. This tramway modernization project represents a total investment of 27.36 million euros, to which we are contributing with a support of 4.6 million euros,” stated Charles Ange Ginésy. He thus emphasizes the desire to offer efficient transportation solutions tailored to users’ needs.
With this investment, the Department continues its efforts towards more efficient and environmentally friendly mobility. The optimization of tram line 1 aims to provide residents with a more efficient network, aligned with the challenges of ecological transition.
