Starter, main course, dessert, and even wine. Within the Saint Jean d’Angely senior residence in Nice, seniors are welcomed in the best possible manner, especially to shelter from the intense heat waves. The Alpes Maritimes region will be affected by the heatwave throughout August, and the city of Nice ensures that its infrastructures are always operational to assist the most vulnerable. At “La Pignata”, every Wednesday, the restaurant is specially open for seniors, so they can dine in an air-conditioned room. Besides the residents, around “25 people” come from outside to benefit from it, according to Alex, an employee of the center.

They are not just there to eat

“They thoroughly enjoy the activities,” she adds. Every week, beneficiaries can participate in activities. A reading workshop, memory exercises, or even board games, all means are good to entertain them. For the most creative, there are even sewing workshops. In short, facilities are set up to cater to all tastes.

Not so many seniors after all

“It’s too hot, people don’t cross the city,” says a local resident who wishes to remain anonymous. Apart from the 70 surrounding apartments, outside attendance remains quite low. For Alex, it’s really not “amazing.” However, the Wednesday meals haven’t started long ago this season. It remains to be seen how attendance will be for the rest of August.
