The day was glorious for Thomas Bach. The German leader was re-elected this Wednesday, March 10, for a second consecutive term as President of the IOC.

The election was scheduled for the first day of the 137th session of the Olympic body (March 10-12), organized for the second time in a virtual mode.

Thomas Bach became President of the IOC in September 2013, succeeding Belgian Jacques Rogge, during the Buenos Aires session, for a first eight-year term. This time, Thomas Bach was the sole candidate. He therefore continues, without a hint of suspense, for a second and final four-year term. He will be the one presiding over the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

He will face a major challenge. Namely, organizing the Tokyo Olympics amid the global health situation we are experiencing. For him, the message is clear:

“The question is not whether the Games will take place, but how.”
