Tourism Economy: Summer 2017 Will Be a Good Year

Latest News

Good news for tourist regions, including the Côte d’Azur, which is one of the most internationally recognized brands: 63% of Europeans plan to go on vacation this summer, an increase of 9 points compared to 2016*.

In France, 65% respond that they will go on vacation this summer, a jump of 8 points compared to 2016. According to these estimates, 42 million French people are expected to travel this summer, which is 2.2 million more than in 2016.

After a dip last summer, the improvement involves citizens of all countries surveyed in this study.

The rebound is also particularly notable for Belgians (+13 pts), Italians (+9 pts), Spaniards (+9 pts), and Germans (+8 pts).

The budget is the primary factor in vacation destination choice for travelers, ahead of the risk of attacks and the climate: Europeans will therefore significantly shorten the duration of their vacations. Their holiday stays will last an average of 1.9 weeks (compared to 2.4 weeks last year).

With an average duration of two weeks, the French will have the longest vacations. Nonetheless, they have been shortened since they lasted 2.7 weeks in 2016. Only 10% of French people who take vacations will go away for 4 weeks or more, a decline of 10 points in one year.

The trend towards shorter stays is widespread in Europe. As a result, Europeans will spend less on their vacations. They plan an average budget of 1,989 euros per household, a decrease of 12% compared to last year. The French are in line with the average, with a budget of 1,982 euros (-11%).
