Since April 10, a new take-off procedure has been implemented by Nice airport. This change is intended to better separate airplane traffic from helicopter traffic, improving safety. As we remember, this led to numerous complaints, a petition was even created, and an investigation was opened regarding the increase in nuisances.
The Deputy Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, conveyed this to the Minister of Transport, Jean-Louis Borloo, who, aware of the inconveniences caused, requested that an investigation be opened.
The French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) has identified three sources of nuisances and proposes measures that should significantly improve the situation, with a noticeable noise reduction effect for local residents starting in November, without compromising flight safety.
The first step is the establishment of an Environmental Protection Volume (EPV) prohibiting overflight near the coast, with possible financial penalties. This measure, after consultation and adoption by the airlines, could be applied at the beginning of 2009.
Turning planes towards the sea by November and increasing the altitude from which full engine power is allowed, this last measure will take effect in the coming days.
The Mayor of Nice is pleased with these provisions which provide “satisfaction for this credibility and respect accorded to Nice.”
