Weather: Alpes-Maritimes on red alert for rain and floods

This Thursday, October 17, 2024, Nice and the entire Alpes-Maritimes department are on red alert for rain-flooding, announced Météo France. This alert, the highest possible, will take effect from 6 p.m.

The weather situation predicts intense rainfall, with accumulations between 70 and 100 millimeters, which could locally reach 120 millimeters, especially in high-altitude areas. Schools are being asked to close their doors this afternoon.

The president of the Alpes-Maritimes department announced that “over 1,350 agents from CD06 and SDIS 06 are mobilized and deployed across the territory.”

This red alert indicates a high risk of dangerous weather conditions, which could lead to sudden floods, mudslides, and flash floods. Although the orange alert for thunderstorms and river floods remains active, it is the intensity of the rainfall that particularly concerns the authorities.

The alert is expected to be downgraded to orange around midnight, then to yellow by Friday noon.

Public transport will be disrupted. Lignes d’Azur announces modifications to some of its lines. More information is available on the Lignes d’Azur website.

Other French departments are also on alert for similar weather phenomena. The Loire, Rhône, Haute-Loire, and Lozère are on red alert for floods, while Ardèche is on red alert for rain-flooding.

Residents of the affected areas are urged to exercise extreme caution. Follow the recommendations of local authorities to prepare for this intense weather episode. Stay safely at home.
