The flagship of the Maltese armada during the corsair century (1580-1680), the galleys were excessively costly floating prisons, unfit for long voyages, high seas, and rough weather, representing only a tiny part of the Knights of Malta’s fleet. Yet, despite their small number, it was on them that the Knights of Malta founded their enduring reputation as corsairs in the Mediterranean.
