Works on the Nice-Ventimiglia line

Since September 15, 2024, the railway line between Nice and Ventimiglia is suspended from 10 PM to 6 AM. This suspension takes place from Sunday to Thursday. It is due to large-scale works. The SNCF and local authorities are taking measures to mitigate the impact on users. These measures particularly concern cross-border workers.

Since September 15, trains between Nice and Ventimiglia no longer run from 9 PM to 6 AM from Sunday to Thursday. This measure is part of works that will last until June 26, 2025. Approximately 20 million euros are being invested to modernize the infrastructure. This project mainly aims to strengthen the Saint-Laurent to Èze tunnel. It also includes upgrading the electrical equipment of the catenaries. This equipment dates back to 1969 and requires an update.

Impact on users

This suspension mainly affects 5,000 Italian and French cross-border workers who travel daily between Monaco and Ventimiglia. Users were informed by email from the SNCF, which caused discontent among some users. Workers in the restaurant sector, who depend on night trains for their jobs, are particularly affected. The Government of the Principality of Monaco is concerned about the impact on travel.

Negotiations and adjustments to the works

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region and the Principality of Monaco have heard the concerns raised and therefore initiated discussions with the SNCF, which allowed them to modify the work schedules. Since Monday, September 23, trains run until 10 PM. The works will be canceled during matches at the Louis II stadium and at the Allianz Riviera. These adjustments provide some flexibility for users, especially during important events.

Substitute bus for travelers

To compensate for the absence of trains, the SNCF is setting up a substitute bus. This bus connects Monaco to Nice. It departs at 11:30 PM from the Sainte Dévote Bridge and arrives at the port of Nice at 12:10 AM. Users will need to fill out a “work pass” form and present proof of subscription to use this service at no additional cost. This measure, although necessary, cannot fully compensate for the inconvenience caused by the train stoppage.
