World Athletics Final

7

On Friday, September 9, and Saturday, September 10, the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Finals in Athletics will take place at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco. Apart from the World Championships held in Helsinki last August, this event is the climax of a particularly exciting season.

The list of entrants for the World Finals in Athletics is determined from the global rankings of each discipline, ensuring the presence of the greatest athletes of the moment at Louis II Stadium this weekend (Ladji Doucourré, Maurice Greene, Justin Gatlin, Allen Johnson, Christine Arron…).

The past two editions of the World Athletics Finals attest to the quality of the competition. It features 35 events: 18 for men and 17 for women (no steeplechase for the ladies). This year, the event will be an opportunity for many champions to debut their Helsinki medals.

As usual, the second day of competition will conclude with the prestigious Gala, organized by the International Athletics Foundation, during which the Athlete of the Year awards will be presented. Last year, Yelena Isinbayeva (RUS) and Kenenisa Bekele (ETH), both Olympic champions and world record holders, respectively, in women’s pole vault and men’s 10,000m, were honored. This year, Russian jumper Tatiana Lebedeva, who will pocket a million dollars in Monaco following her victory in the Golden League (six wins at six meets in Paris, Rome, Oslo, Zurich, Brussels, and Berlin), is the favorite for this title.
